Bernd Faass
Bernd Faass is a prolific visual effects-inspired director who finds the fantastic in the ordinary – whether it's a chef struck by lightning; an onion floating through space; or a subway-turned-stock exchange full of doppelgängers. Bernd treats his subjects as heroes no matter how banal their lives may seem from the outside, finding the wonder of the universe in every human he turns his lens to.
Bernd was born and raised in an asteroid crater in the southern German countryside. His father was a car mechanic and his mother an office worker and the fact that no one around him had anything to do with creative jobs, let alone filmmaking, allowed him to develop a vivid and unique imagination and desire to create worlds and characters and situations that felt like something you couldn't really think up. This original point of view earned him a place at the prestigious Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, where he took inspiration from directors like Spike Jonze, and became obsessed with the problem solving part of filmmaking – a process he describes as “German engineering on LSD”.
In 2018, Bernd won the Gold Porsche International Student Advertising Award for ‘Tears In Heaven’, a campaign for his own brand, Tears Dry Gin. Bernd has been shortlisted for the British Arrows Best New Director, D&AD Next Director awards and One Point Four awards. Bernd has directed globally celebrated commercial campaigns for clients including Mercedes, Lidl, Bosch, Sparkasse, iShares, Ionos, Etsy, HP, and Porsche. A stand out moment includes his ‘Work Anywhere’ campaign for HP that showed a new generation of post-Covid office staff working hard at spectacular and unexpected locations all over the world, perfectly and emotionally capturing the spirit of a new global culture.
